⚙️ 7. The Truth About Drivelines and Vibrations
🗣️ The Myth: "We run heavy commercial traffic. Some shaking and vibration in the hull is completely normal; it's just the massive engines working."
⚙️ The Technical Reality:
Drivelines on heavy commercial vessels transmit immense torque. There is no such thing as "normal" unwanted vibration. Vibration is energy lost to physical resistance. It is almost exclusively caused by microscopic deviations in engine-to-gearbox alignment, bent propeller shafts, cavitation from damaged props, or worn cutless bearings.
⚠️ The Hidden Risks:
A misaligned driveline is a ticking time bomb. It sends violent, destructive resonance waves straight into the gearbox and the main engine's crankshaft. Continued operation results in collapsed main bearings or a snapped crankshaft. The result? Being towed to drydock and losing weeks of operation.
🔬 The Evidence Method (NDT & Analysis):
Laser alignment verification, advanced vibration analysis during full sea trials, and thermographic scanning of support bearings.
⚖️ The Chairman's Verdict:
A commercial vessel must operate with surgical precision. We measure tolerances in hundredths of a millimeter to ensure 100% propulsion efficiency.
